As my site grows, my instagram is growing as well. I am currently at 1250+ followers, not crazy numbers I know, but a good amount of my followers and non followers who like my pics are people that even if I don’t know who they are they definitely meet the criteria for people I would interview. So whenever I post something and I get a bunch of likes (50+) I look to see whose liking my stuff. Every now and then like I said I see someones name and then check out their page and they are a producer or graphic designer or manager that I would want to interview, and that’s how I came across SkynnyDoubleY.
His credits intrigued me, his page intrigued me, so I reached out. To find out more about this producer and to check out his beats keep scrolling down.
Major credits? Produced and Mixed for AD (@iitsad) , Compton AVStarlito , Wave Chapelle , Taylor gang , I have production with members from 808 Mafia as well as multi platinum producers Nard & B
How old are you? 27
Where are you from? From Los Angeles , Ca . I was born in New Jersey though .
How long have you been producing? Why/How did you get into it? Been producing for 5 years but doing music and mixing for 8 . I got started when I was playing around recording guys in my barracks while In the Marines.
What’s the dopest thing to happen to you since you started making music and releasing product? The dopest thing to happen is getting super humbling messages from people I’ve never met telling me I inspire them . I’m like really ?? I’m glad I get to help so many people . I mean it sounds corny but it’s true .
Who are your biggest influences? My biggest influence is my family ( my fiancé and my mom ) they motivate to keep doing what I do after wanting to quit so many times .
Want to give any shoutouts? Yeah my mom and my fiancé for being my best friends through it all . Also shoutout to Beastmode Dav for Getting me my first big placement w a national artist.
What is something about you people would be surprised to know? That I drink like 100 cups of coffee a day and most people are surprised when I tell them I don’t smoke or drink at all .
What is the best platform for selling your beats? why? It’s a mixture of things I can’t say one works better than the other . Using beatstars mixed with releasing consistent content on YouTube and social has been key
Whats your process for making a beat? I keep it simple I never really plan it out . I kind of just find a melody playing around on the keyboard or I use a sample or loop find the key of it and play around it . Add the drums . Level everything the way I like it and bounce it into my folder . It’s all about sound selection and and having super good drums and percussion that make you stand out .
What do your beats normally cost? It varies . I sell leases online for the normal $30 for mp3 and $50 for Wav but I’ve been paid a few thousand for a beat . Crazy part is it never even got used …
What is the most you have made from one beat? A few thousand .. shoutout to Bankroll Fresh (RIP) his birthday is coming up . He was the first one to give me over $1000 for a beat .
Any stories on how you got some of your placements? Working with artists over a period of time and they got features which allowed me to tap in with the artist . Also working in and out of many studios in LA put me in the right spot to hook me up w some placements
What Hardware or software do you use? is there any reason why you like to particularly use what you use? FL gang for life . I started making beats in Logic years ago because that’s what I mixed on . Then tried FL like 10 different times and on the 11th time my boy showed me and I got it !
What are your plans for 2018? Releasing a beat everyday on my site and YouTube and rebuilding a catalog .. I had all my gear stolen when I was locked up most of 2017 … crazy long story but yeah rebuilding and going hard !
Who do you think will part of the new wave in 2018? (producer wise and rapper wise) Idk man things change so fast you never know . It gets weirder every year . It’s more an expression of who you are than the music itself to be honest . I just feel a lot of producers are going to be coming up as artists too.
Do you have other income streams besides producing? If so, what are they? Nope this is all I do everyday 15 hrs a day
Do you receive royalties from any of your beats? Can you give an example with actual numbers? I can’t I don’t keep up with it tbh
What does youtube monetization look like for you? can you give an example of what you might have earned off of at least one of your beat videos (if you upload youtube beat videos)? (views/earnings) For over a million views on my channel I made 2000+ just from monetization.
