Interview + 4 beats with Producer Thomas Crager Beats

Thomas Crager is a producer I found while doing some searching on YouTube. His  production work tends to fall into the categories of “Pop”, “RnB”, and lighter hip hop. In fact if you look at his YouTube page a lot of his “type beats” are for artists such as Kehlani, Chance The Rapper, Tory Lanez, Drake… and ill be damned if his beats don’t sound like they would be perfect for those rappers.

YouTube: Thomas started his YouTube page in 2014 and since then has accumulated over 23,000 subscribers on YouTube and a little over 5.9 million views with his highest viewed video currently at 850K views:

Though there are dozens of songs on Genius that have been produced by him, he openly admits his only real major placement is a track from Huey Mack featuring Devvon Terrell:

Who are your major credits? Huey Mac and Devvon Terrell are my biggest placements so far. I have some major credits in the works for 2018, but can’t announce anything till the paperwork is locked in.

How old are you? 24

Where are you from?  I was born in France, but grew up in Connecticut.

How long have you been producing? I started about 3 years ago, but mostly just joking around, making a beat once a month, with no intention of making it into a career. Out of boredom I had posted a few beats online and eventually had people contacting me who were interested in purchasing them. After making a sale I started to take production more seriously and it morphed into my current career. I’ve been taking producing seriously for a little over a year, but have always been doing music, having played guitar since I was 9 and writing lyrics and songs since a teenager.

What’s the dopest thing to happen to you since you started making music and releasing product? I produced a song for an artists upcoming album dropping in 2018 and I’ll be the only producer on the project who hasn’t been nominated for a grammy, so I’d say that’s pretty cool, considering I’ve only been seriously producing for a single year. Also, just being able to support myself off solely music and turn it into a career is extremely dope and shows me you can do anything you put your mind to.

Who are your biggest influences? I’ve been into so many different genres of music, my influences range from jazz guitarists including Pat Martino and Freddie Green to hip-hop producers including Dr. Dre and Murda Beatz; just to name a few. I’ve binged on almost every genre of music there is and I try to take my favorite characteristics from each genre and morph it into my own unique sound.

What is something about you people would be surprised to know? I’m also a composer/arranger/orchestrator. I can do anything from compose a symphony to arrange horns and strings for a movie score.

What do your beats normally cost? My leases start from $30 and go all the way up to $400, depending on what type of lease license you’re looking for. I sell exclusives rights as well, but the price can vary depending on the beat.

Do you use Hardware or software? Mostly software for now, although I’ve been curious about looking into hardware to add contrast to my creative process.

How many leases or beats, do you think you have sold in your career? I couldn’t even tell you, I lost count after 1,000.

What are your plans for 2018? Continue to grow my brand and craft. I plan on getting placements with bigger artists, but will still release an abundance of beats to my Youtube page/beat store. I’m also going to expand my daily routine to include producing for TV/commercial/movie placements.
