dansonnbeats is one of the biggest producers on YouTube not named Taz Taylor, CashmoneyAP, or mjNichols. Since creating his YouTube account in late 2009, he has racked up close to 65 MILLION VIEWS (less than 13K away) and has been able to produce for famed hip hop acts such as RZA, MC JIN, M.O.P. and even Sticky Fingaz (of Onyx).
I emailed him at the beginning of this month and thought he wouldn’t respond but to my surprise I got an email from him 2 days ago. Check out the interview and some of his beats below:
Any major credits I should list?
RZA (of Wu-Tang Clan), MC Jin, ESPN, New Balance, The Tennis Channel, Maverik Lacrosse, Vossen Wheels
How old are you?
24 years old
Where are you from?
How long have you been producing?
Starting producing in 2009, but got much more serious in 2010.
What’s the dopest thing to happen to you since you started making music and releasing product?
I think the craziest thing has been that I’ve been able to make a living off of music now. I never thought it was possible when I first started out, so now it’s still surreal to wake up everyday and be lucky enough to do what I love for a living.
Who are your biggest influences?
I don’t have many specific artists that influenced me, but my sound was heavily inspired by film music and hard hitting underground rap. I love the sonics and depth that you hear in film music and the rhythm and groove of hip hop. I’ve tried to combine the two over the years to create my own sound now.
Want to give any shoutouts?
Just want to give a shout out to all creatives out there! One of the most inspiring things for me to see are fellow creatives pursuing their dreams, whether in music, film, or art. Keep working at it!
What is something about you people would be surprised to know?
People are generally surprised that I was classically trained in cello and listened to a lot of classical music growing up.
What do your beats normally cost?
Licenses start at $20 and can range to around $2000.
What is the most you have made from one beat?
From total license sales, probably close to $10,000.
Who are the favorite artists you have produced for?
I’ve been lucky to work with many different artists, but probably MC Jin. I’m working with Jin right now on some of his projects in China, and it’s given me a lot of different experiences to create music for his EP, commercials, and other campaigns in a new country.
Hardware or software?
Software. The accessibility of software today is the main way I was able to get started producing. I personally like working in the computer better for workflow efficiency.
How many leases or beats, do you think you have sold in your career?
I’ve been selling beats for 7 years now, so it’s been thousands. I have no idea how many honestly, I’m just focused on the next beats!
