Pittsburgh has given us Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, and Battle Rap legend Real Deal (I wasn’t going to forget him son!) and today we (yeah I am from the burg) have a lot of talented rappers on the local scene. One of them being Walkman. He is not that new age goth or party rap. He makes rap music that is filled with real and interesting lyrics and concepts. I would say his music lives in the same space as Classified.
Do yourself a favor and check out his videos and interview below.
Interview with Pittsburgh Rapper, Walkman:
How did you come up with your artist name Walkman?I’m an old school guy, so I wanted something nostalgic. The Walkman was a staple in hip hop that is no longer around. I’d like to think I’m bringing an element back as well.
How old are you? – 30
Favorite place to eat in Pittsburgh? – Anywhere in the strip district. I’ve been trying a lot of food from different cultures lately, but Pho Van and Gaucho are some of my go to’s.
Who exactly is Walkman for anyone who does not know? – I’m honestly just a regular dude that loves hip hop to the core. I’m pretty much never serious, and a lot of that comes out in my videos.
How long have you been making music? – I started writing here and there since I was 15, but didn’t record until I was at least 18 or 19. I was more of a freestyle rapper until then.
What’s the dopest thing to happen to you since you started making music and releasing product? – I’d have to say when that freestyle video I did went viral. I just threw a verse down while I was delivering pizzas and it took off. That was crazy to me.
What did you do today? – Pretty boring day haha. When I’m not working or in the studio, I’m shipping merch and writing for the next album. That’s pretty much all I did today.
Who are your biggest influences? Too many to name. Nas, Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Mobb Deep, and Redman just to name a few. Oh and Eminem of course, I played his older stuff non stop when it was came out.
Want to give any shoutouts? Yeah I want to shout out my producer, What Iph. He’s the man behind the curtain that helps make it all possible. “15229” would have turned out much differently had I recorded somewhere else.
What is something about you people would be surprised to know? – I don’t know how to read. Nah, I’m just playing. I think something that would surprise people is that I wrote the whole “15229” album while I was driving at work. Not the safest thing, but its the truth haha.
