Str8 out of Waterloo: An interview with Scottychams

Scottychams is a rapper that I was introduced to recently who actually has an album coming out August 1st. The album has been described as “mostly old school hip hop beats but the style is unique and modern. It’s mostly talking about government corruption, different perspectives, mindset to succeed, and his opinion on a lot of what’s going on in our culture.” So make sure to stay tuned~

Who are you?

Where are you from? Do you still live there or did you move?
Waterloo, but moving to Toronto soon

How do you create and / or get inspired for your art/work?
I was at one point lost and didn’t know what to do with my life. Having found my passion I’m extremely motivated to help other people embrace theirs and shape their own reality.

Does where you’re from have any influence on your music?
My music is influenced by international culture, events, and striving for one’s passion. I don’t believe that a geographical location should have much influence on my style or message.

What’s the dopest thing to happen to you since you started making music and releasing products?
Finishing my first album “System Failure” which I’ve been working on for a year and a half.

What did you do today?
Recorded a feature with Irvin Fame.

What’s in your pockets right now?
Nothing, I’m in the studio.

Who are your biggest influences?
Chance The Rapper is my biggest overall influence, he’s an amazing artist and has done so much for music. I’m also really influenced by Taylor Bennett, his brother, Alex Wiley, and Isaiah Rashad.

What are your goals?
To inspire other independent artists and those just starting to believe in their passion and work on their craft. My main milestone I’m working towards now is to have released more than 100 songs by the end of 2018.

What do you want the world to know about you?
I do the majority of my work myself. I do everything from songwriting and recording, to video production, to sound engineering, to website design.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I plan to have released over 200 songs and have a feature with Chance The Rapper or one of my other influences.

Want to give any shout outs?
I’d like to shout out my We The 9 crew.
