The Amethyst Rxckstars are an under the radar producer group with a vault of bangers

By: Petaluma Al                                                                                                                     4/30/2017

I first discovered the group Amethyst Rxckstars when I started listening to one of their individual pages while I was searching for beats.  The group is comprised of two producers, MiiiKXY and Serge Crown and I am not sure whose beat I found first but I do know that either way I eventually found the group page for them. When I did, I was and I still am intrigued by the fact that they are a group seeing as how most of the producers I see on YouTube are solo artists.

If you have been following the page you already know that I featured one of their beats in a previous post.  While recently looking at their page again I found out that they have amassed 13,216 subscribers and 1,964,410 views since they first created their page at the end of June, 2016. The work they produce is simple, yet creative, and brings a spacey, 80’s, video games vibe to the track. For example the following track which they just uploaded an hour ago, will let you know what I mean.

The beat above, could be tagged as any of the following artists, Asap Rocky x ilovemakonnen x kyle x chance the rapper x lil yachty x Lil Uzi Vert, and more. Like most of the beats they produce it has semblances of mainstream but just alternative and creative enough to not come across as tacky and run of the mill.

I thought it could be beneficial for some of the producers and rappers alike who visit this blog to see how this team has started to build success in their own right. So I decided to hit up the team and ask them some questions and what I found out was pretty interesting. After you read the interview you will be able to tell, just like I was, that they are a dynamic and mysterious group. One is clearly more hood then the other one is, I like to imagine they are like a young Lupe Fiasco and Chili’ Patton. Or like those two best friends growing up where one was always in the street and the other was at home tinkering on the computer and shit. I don’t know, but anyways, the following is the first 5 of 10 questions I sent them and their individual responses.

1.How did you come up with the name Amethyst Rockstars?

MiiiKXY: We was outside my house thinking about a name. I thought about the name Amethyst Rxckstars ( I got the influence from Pro Era and Saul Williams). Serge kinda disagreed with the name cause the word rockstars would set up a different vibe. But in a way I told him we rockstars and he was convinced, so there you have it birth of the name Amethyst Rxckstars. It might change down the road doe.

Serge Crown: The inspiration for that is Pro Era and Saul Williams. We had other names in mind but that was for a rap group, so later we used this inspiration to be called Amethyst Rxckstars. Spirituality is a huge influence too. Basically reffering to a purple crystal. When Mike first told me about the name eye thought of Joey Bada$$’s song. Sure eye thought the Rockstar part would make the people on the internet give a different vibe but who cares. Our music matters most. And we aren’t just rappers or producers. We rockstars.

2.Where are you guys located? Are you involved in your local rap

MiiiKXY: Issa mystery. Y’all find out soon. Not really they on some corny shit.

Serge Crown:Can’t tell. Not just yet. The rap scene here isn’t really a big thing. There is no wave going on. Its so small that even the underground has its own underground. There are good artists but some are generic and corny and their sound is belated  (1990s – early 2000s). But doesn’t mean there aren’t any good. Its more poetic here.

3.How did y’all meet and decide to form a group? In my experience I typically see more producers working on YouTube alone.

MiiiKXY: We knew each other since we were kids. Our friendship was built on wrestling, we use to stan The Hardy Boyz and DX. We used to want to be a wrestling team lmao. So you can see we was always together and on the same page as kids. About the second part. I always push for diversity and uniqueness, and me personally I don’t know a producer group on YouTube. So I was like why not. We originally decided to do it solo doe. It just came to be.

Serge Crown: We knew each other since we were kids (2007). One of us was 8 (MiiiKXY) and the other 9 (Serge). We first connected on wrestling. We talked about it alot and played it on Ps2. Then around 2009, MiiiKXY introduced me to rap and thats how eye first knew about it. In 2011, there was a short silence between us. Nothing big just got distant. Later on early 2012, MiiiKXY came to the same school as me and by the end of it we were hanging out along with the rest of the crew. We also gained interest on Greek Mythology around the year and watched all sorts of movies and stuff. By 2013, eye was interested in becoming a rapper after getting deep into Eminem (yes eye was a Stan, eye know its cringy) and Em inspired me to furthermore be determined enough to work more on my rapping and writing skills (even tho eye still sucked till like 2015 lol) it was around this time MiiiKXY and eye started working together and helped eachother to be where we are today. The rest is what we are today.

4.Who are your biggest producing influences?

MiiiKXY: Many to be honest from DJ Premier to Dilla to Doom to Madlib to Kanye to Kirk Knight to Erick Arc to Southside definitely Serge Crown. I can go on for hours, doe the goat for me is Metro Boomin his my main inspiration.

Serge Crown: Tbh Kanye West, Frank Ocean, David Bowie, Travis Scott, Erick The Architect, Metro Boomin and ofc MiiiKXY

5.Who are your non producer influences?
MiiiKXY: Again many I could go all day. I can tell your the first five that come to mind, Tyler the creator Lil Yachty Lil uzi Capital Steez Travis Scott

Serge Crown:Besides the ones on the previous list there are many. As artists theres: Eminem, Capital STEEZ, Chance The Rapper, Joey Bada$$, Pusha T, $uicideboy$, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Kendrick Lamar, Bon Iver, Nas, Jay Z, The Underachievers, Flatbush Zombies, Ab Soul, Orphaned Land, Scorpions, Tupac, Ice Cube, Nirvana, J. Cole, Lil Yachty, Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler The Creator, 50 Cent and many more . . . Eye can go all day lol.
